CathayPlay Expands to East Asian Independent Cinema
A New Invitation Across Borders
Following Berlinale 2026, CathayPlay is proud to announce the expansion of its curatorial scope to East Asia, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Chinese-language filmmakers in Malaysia and beyond.
This marks a new chapter in CathayPlay’s mission to support non-mainstream, politically conscious, and aesthetically bold cinema from across the region.
“Independent cinema in East Asia deserves more than the margins. It deserves a shared, living platform.”
Since its founding, CathayPlay has operated on two key fronts:
- A membership-based streaming service for global cinephiles passionate about Chinese-language independent cinema;
- A robust and growing educational licensing program, used by institutions such as Columbia University, the University of California system, and other leading universities around the world.
With nearly 1,000 curated titles currently available, CathayPlay has become a reference point for researchers, educators, programmers, and viewers engaging with alternative voices in Sinophone cinema.
Now, we are opening the platform to filmmakers, producers, curators, and collectives across East Asia who share the same urgency and vision.
