Echoes from Afar: A Global Touring Program of Chinese Independent Cinema, February 2026
Curated for cinemas, art houses, film festivals, and cultural institutions worldwide, this program features over ten Chinese independent films ideally suited for the big screen. Like scattered cultural coordinates, they collectively map the diverse realities of the contemporary Chinese diaspora.
The selection spans historical narratives from Three Gorges migrants to overseas Chinese laborers, and contemporary observations from youth subcultures to rural faith. It also includes intimate female portraits and explorations of queer identity. Genres range from observational documentary and anthropological cinema to essay films and experimental fiction, with flexible runtimes and distinctive visual styles.
While grounded in specific locales and experiences, these films tackle universal themes of migration, memory, identity, and belonging—resonating deeply with global audiences. We have compiled this program as a “ready-to-screen” toolkit for international curators, offering both academic substance and engaging storytelling.
The full program is now featured on CathayPlay’s website. We welcome inquiries from screening venues and are happy to support tailored programming to suit your space and audience.
Let’s bring these echoes from afar to a screen near you.
