Stories That Say What We Can’t

CathayPlay 6 films

We cannot always put our feelings into words.

Sometimes, we feel exhausted without knowing why, or simply want some quiet time alone. We may be navigating loss, family relationships or emotions we cannot name. At other times, we just feel that no one truly understands us.

Drawing on different people’s lived experiences, these fourteen works of Asian independent cinema explore depression, anxiety, trauma, loneliness, grief, family relationships, caregiving and psychological healing. When feelings are difficult to express, when someone chooses silence, or when we face experiences that have no easy resolution, cinema offers a way to see others and understand ourselves anew.

These stories may not provide answers, but they make visible emotions that often go unspoken. A character’s struggle, the silence within a relationship or a familiar feeling can sometimes be enough to make us pause and reconsider how we understand ourselves and those around us.

This World Mental Health Day, we invite you to choose a film from this selection, take some time to watch it and share how it makes you feel.

Because the value of some stories lies not in telling us what to do, but in helping us realize—someone else has felt this way, too.
