As China's construction sector declines, migrant workers are forced off building sites. Lao He is one of them. In his sixties and eager to save for retirement, he leaves home again for Beijing's outskirts to do daily-wage jobs. But in the "market" valuing physical strength, his age repeatedly costs him work. To survive, he starts disguising his age.

Director

I came across the world of day laborers by chance. Elderly workers, unwilling to retire after leaving construction sites, gather in corners of the city, searching for daily odd jobs. Old He (Mr. He) is one of them. Three years ago, his wife’s cancer drained the family’s savings. To survive, he joined this labor market at the age of 76.To recreate his experience, I adopted a creative approach that blurs the line between documentary and fiction. Old He “plays” himself, and the labor market is real. It’s difficult for me to define the genre of this film. But one thing is certain: the circumstances faced by the characters are authentic. What I hope to reveal is a soul like Old He’s—one that, despite being at the bottom of society, possesses a profound sense of moral integrity.
